CA60 Conantum Herb Garden Program
July 15, 2018 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Come Visit a Community Herb Garden in Conantum
Sunday, July 15, 2-4 PM At the Ball Field on Heaths Bridge Road, Conantum
Rain Location will be at 340 Holden Wood Road, Conantum
The Conantum Community Herb Garden has been in existence for 13 years. It was first conceived by Pam and Mark Hanson as a way to introduce neighbors to the joys of gardening in a community garden. Conantum is an association of just over 100 homes all built in the early 1950s for members of the MIT community. The community garden is part of 60 acres of common land owned jointly by all “Conantumites”. The herb garden has grown in popularity so that now almost 50 households belong and pick their herbs from May to November.
Weather permitting, Pam will give a tour of the garden, and introduce you to some of the less usual herbs which she grows. The garden is not large, but contains a central circle of perennial thyme, sage and lavender with surrounding beds of annual and perennial herbs and edible flowers, including bee balm, marigolds, nasturtiums, bachelor buttons, lavender and johnny-jump-ups. It is a sustainable, organic garden, mulched with wood chip paths and an elegant new gate designed by a Conantum artist.
If the weather is good, you should plan to park on Healths Bridge Road (not on the grass), and walk less than 100 yards to the garden up a non-paved road. As you turn off Sudbury Road onto Heaths Bridge Road, the garden access road is on your right after a short expanse of woodland. Parking is on the right at the edge of the field. Those who cannot walk far can drive up to the garden or be dropped off at the garden. We will have signs to tell you where we will be. If it is raining, the program will be held at Pam and Mark’s house at 340 Holden Wood Road. There will be herbal refreshments and an opportunity to smell and/or taste many less usual herbs such as salad burnet, lovage, and bronze fennel.
