SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting: Concord's Sister City in Japan
DESCRIPTION:THE CONCORD-NANAE CONNECTION \nSue Curtin\, longtime resident and teacher in Concord\,  has been involved with this program for over 20 years and has taken over the leadership role of the Sister City program that her husband originally held. \nTHE CONCORD-NANAE CONNECTION started a long time ago. Soon after Admiral Perry opened the doors to Japan in the 1850’s\, the new Emperor Meiji instituted a bold plan to westernize and modernize Japan\, in part by relying on the expertise of “hired foreigners” (yatoi gaikokujin). \nMany New Englanders were enlisted to help develop its northernmost island of Hokkaido\, including Dr. William Clark\, then President of Massachusetts Agricultural College (now the University of Massachusetts in Amherst). In 1876\, Dr. Clark went to Hokkaido with three graduate students\, including William Wheeler from Concord\, to create Sapporo Agricultural College (now Hokkaido University). Their primary mission was to introduce northern agriculture and dairy farming to the region. \nThe connections continue. Come hear how Concord and Massachusetts are keeping the relationship going and growing. Learn how the formal relationship has grown and what is anticipated for the coming years.

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting-Film Screening: Exile and Community: The Life of Carola Domar
DESCRIPTION:Carola Domar escaped Nazi Germany in her teens and came to the States\, where she married and built a new life in Concord\, finding true belonging within the unique neighborhood of Conantum. In this documentary film\, she and her daughter tell the story of her persistent search for community. A high-spirited\, resourceful person\, Domar yearned as a young Jew for the social acceptance and German identity she once took for granted. She escaped in her teens and came to the U.S. on her own. Carola spent much of her life searching for a specific kind of community–one connected to nature and guided by modernist ideals–and ultimately found it in Concord\, MA. \nDomar’s story is all the more remarkable for the spirit of forgiveness with which she ultimately came to terms with her past and reconnected with her former homeland. Her story of exile and community has particular relevance in the context of current mass migration. \nNote the Different Monthly Meeting Location:\nThis film screening and discussion with Carola Domar’s daughter\, Erica D. Banderob\, and the film’s producer\, Susan Orleans Rieder\, will be held in the Parish Hall of the Trinity Episcopal Church. Please use the River Street entrance.
