SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting: Presentation Topic - Cuba
DESCRIPTION:Socialization followed by a presentation by Anne Umphrey on her several trips to Cuba. \nCuba through the camera lens: reflecting on the Cuban people and their lives. Presented by Anne Umphrey.  \nIn 2003 I traveled to Cuba with WGBH Learning Tours. It was then that I fell in love with the Cuban people\, their spirit\, their friendliness and their resilience. In spite of privations they opened their homes and their lives to me. Since that time I have returned 3 more times\, the most recent trip in 2016\, seeing changes on each trip. The Cuban people are still the same but their lives are now marginally better in terms of clothing\, food and the basic necessities of life. The photos I take represent a few of the many that I have taken of people in the cities and the countryside.

SUMMARY:Helping Each Other: Growing Concord After 60
DESCRIPTION:January is a time of new beginnings\, and we want to start off the new year with a discussion of all the things we can do to engage with each other\, new and old friends\, in new and helpful ways. One of the main goals of Concord After 60 is to provide mutual support to each other so we may continue to  live  independently .  After a year and a half of growth and activities\, we want to explore how we can build on the relationships that we have formed. \nSunday\, after refreshments\, we will brainstorm about three different CA60 volunteer opportunities.  These include leadership roles in the activities/small groups (book group\, walking\,  movies and plays trips\, etc.) or serving on the  steering committee; “Help in a Pinch\,” short term help for each other; and hosting meetings or providing beverages or refreshments at a meeting.  We also want to know what kinds of support you think would be most helpful to you\, and what kinds of topics would be interesting for us all to explore. \nPut your thinking caps on and join us for a fun afternoon of sharing and thinking about ways to make Concord After 60 mean more to all of us who have started on this venture.

SUMMARY:Cutting the Cable: Toward Free TV - One Concordian's Experience
DESCRIPTION:Mary Ann Fay-Gunnarson will be describing the process she went through three years ago to replace “for-pay” TV with free broadcast TV\, providing the same entertainment. \nDisconnecting cable TV is a hot topic of the moment.  This presentation will describe how to use a digital receiver to get free broadcast TV\, as in the days of old before cable arrived.  Contemporary TV  entertainment options\, such as streaming via WiFi  (Netflix\, etc.)  and free library resources to watch documentaries (Kanopy) will be included.  The presenter is neither an engineer nor a systems expert\, but a person who learned by doing and asking ordinary questions.  This topic is certainly  work in progress;  it is also very interesting! \nCome and learn what you need to know to do the same in your house and save many $$ per month.

SUMMARY:CA60 Conantum Herb Garden Program
DESCRIPTION:Come Visit a Community Herb Garden in Conantum \nSunday\, July 15\, 2-4 PM At the Ball Field on Heaths Bridge Road\, Conantum \nRain Location will be at 340 Holden Wood Road\, Conantum \nThe Conantum Community Herb Garden has been in existence for 13 years.  It was first conceived by Pam and Mark Hanson as a way to introduce neighbors to the joys of gardening in a community garden.  Conantum is an association of just over 100 homes all built in the early 1950s for members of the MIT community.  The community garden is part of 60 acres of common land owned jointly by all “Conantumites”.   The herb garden has grown in popularity so that now almost 50 households belong and pick their herbs from May to November. \nWeather permitting\, Pam will give a tour of the garden\, and introduce you to some of the less usual herbs which she grows.  The garden is not large\, but contains a central circle of perennial thyme\, sage and lavender with surrounding beds of annual and perennial herbs and edible flowers\, including bee balm\, marigolds\, nasturtiums\, bachelor buttons\, lavender and johnny-jump-ups.  It is a sustainable\, organic garden\, mulched with wood chip paths and an elegant new gate designed by a Conantum artist. \nIf the weather is good\, you should plan to park on Healths Bridge Road (not on the grass)\, and walk less than 100 yards to the garden up a non-paved road.  As you turn off Sudbury Road onto Heaths Bridge Road\, the garden access road is on your right after a short expanse of woodland.  Parking is on the right at the edge of the field.  Those who cannot walk far can drive up to the garden or be dropped off at the garden.  We will have signs to tell you where we will be.  If it is raining\, the program will be held at Pam and Mark’s house at 340 Holden Wood Road.    There will be herbal refreshments and an opportunity to smell and/or taste many less usual herbs such as salad burnet\, lovage\, and bronze fennel. \n
